Yard Transformation and Resurrection, Spring 2013

It is a beautiful day today with the azaleas in full bloom and showcasing their beauty!  I thought I would show you pictures of the yard that I just took today and also pictures from how it used to look before.

We used to see deers all the time in the backyard but after putting up a fence when we built a pool, I have only seen them one more time. They are still around but mostly in the front yard and the road. The middle picture of the mosaic below was the backyard before the pool was built and below it is now, the view from our home office where I am blogging from.

Used to be, we could not go beyond the arbor because it looked scary. I was always imagining lots of snakes crawling all over there, lol.
Here is another picture.

But look at it now! My friend Noemie helped me wack everything back there and I placed the stepping stones going down

Our property slopes down behind the house.

We decided to do some terracing using railroad ties. We had to redo it after we built a pool cause it made a big mess.

I decided to have a secret garden down there.

View of the secret garden from the gazebo bridge.

I placed stepping stones in 3 places so that we can access the secret garden from 3 directions.

This is the view from the pool deck.

The camellias are still blooming too.

The azaleas are also blooming in the side yard outside the fence. I have not touched that area.
To the right is this.  More azales down there. Do you see how our property is situated so high? We can see our neighbors' roofs.

This is my "Deb Tree". One of my best friends, Debjani, moved to NY and she told me to get her magnolia tree. So, yesterdayJohn, friends Gary and Brenda (who Debjani gave her lemon tree to) went to their backyard to dig the trees up. John and I planted it today at the bottom of the hill by the creek in the back. It will always remind me of my dear friend and all the good times we spent together here.
Spring is my favorite time of the year. I just love the flowers blooming all over. Thank you for stopping by. So sorry, I posted so many pictures but I just wanted to document the transformation.

  5. Lots of hard work - but a very pretty payoff!
I have azalea buds, but it may be a bit before they bloom. Rain and much cooler temps coming in this way.
    Have a great week.

  6. Hi Christine, Your property is amazing. So beautiful with all the trees and shrubs. I love the secret garden idea, and you designed it to perfection with more that one entrance. How nice to have more than one seating area in your back yard. Love the view out from your room inside. How do you blog with that view? Never to many photos Christine, I love to visit your home!
Hope you have a wonderful week.

  7. Oh my husband would have such fun in your yard. When we bought this house almost 10 years ago, we gave up a big yard for a new house in a newer neighborhood. We had always had huge lots or two (not nearly as big as yours) and he loved that. Now, we are on a standard lot and while he has fun with the landscaping, there isn't all that much that we can do.

Your flowers are so pretty. I can't wait for some color outside!

  11. So pretty! We've been in clean up mode the last couple of weeks. I've pulled weeds & trimmed everything. I'm ready to do some planting but I'm not convinced our crazy weather is staying warm yet.

  13. Christine, your yard is soooo pretty. I love that yellow Carolina jasmine, and of course, your azaleas. So lovely.

Sending you love across the miles and many thanks for your kind words and prayers. I am so thankful for Jesus and for the fact that we will see Stephen again. He was far too young to go, but he's in a place where there is no more sorrow, sickness, or pain. And best of all, he's with the Lord! I can't even imagine his joy. My heart goes out daily to his parents, and I hope you will keep them in your prayers.

    Love you...

    XO,

    Sheila

  16. Christine - I love the way you have made different areas to enjoy in your yard. Our yard slopes down to a small lake and we have discussed terracing it many times. However, inertia prevailed! So impressed that you actually "got it done" in your yard. Thanks for the before and after photos.
