More Polish Pottery? Yup, I Am Crazy Over Them

Good deal or not? You be the judge!

My friend, Nit, introduced me to Polish Pottery and my kitchen and dining life and pocket book have changed forever:-) She has since moved to Alaska and I miss her so much but my collection persists!

Anyway, someone contacted me by email (She saw my blog about my Polish Pottery collection). She said she is selling all her mother's Polish pottery and asked if I was interested. I told her I already have plenty but if I like them and they are reasonable, I will consider buying and for her to please send me photos. And so she sent me 4 pictures. One of those long folding table was full of them plus 2 cabinets.

I was attracted to a few items like a big square baker (which unfortunately arrived broken), the pie bowls, plates, rolling pin and trivet. She gave me a quote and after adding  them plus shipping, it was already going to cost me over $200.

So, I made an offer to buy everything for $350, including shipping, she accepted the offer and we called it a deal. I figure I can sell whatever I do not want in my booth.

Below is everything I got from the deal. Unfortunately, 1/3 of the pieces were broken (pictures at the bottom) and we are still trying to claim for insurance.

After they packed everything in 4 big boxes, the seller emailed me and said the total weight is 187 lbs., which she did not realize would be that much and wondered if I would be nice enough to add another $50. And I know how heavy they really are so I sent her another $50.

Isn't the rolling pin cute? I was so happy to see it in one piece!
I love the dinner and salad plates. I am glad only 1 of each broke cause these are hard to come by. I hardly ever see them at TJ Maxx and even when I do, they are very expensive, like $19.99 for each plate. On Ebay, dinner plates average $30 for each one.

In spite of so many broken bowls, I still got a LOT of good ones. I had to stack them on top of each other or they would not all fit on the table.
The teapot top looks so lonely without the pot, which came broken. See it on the right by the dinner plates? But that's ok, I already own at least 5 of them.

I also like these 4 rectangular bread bakers. I use what I already have for serving food on the table also.
I love these pie bowls. There were 4 of them but 2 arrived broken but I am happy for these 2 that are ok.

 I like this trivet too.

In the boxes below are all the broken pieces. All heart shaped bowls were broken plus a lot of round bowls, a teapot, lots of soup bowls, utensil holder, dinner plate, dessert plate, mugs and many others. I love Polish pottery and my heart sank everytime I opened and saw a broken one. Some pieces could not even be recognized because they were shattered into little pieces. They came wrapped in linens, which I got so many for free (napkins, bedsheets, pillow cases, tablecloth, towels) but these are very heavy and should probably have been individually bubble wrapped. The seller is very gracious and accomodating and I could not get mad at her. She even included 2 collectible Hummel plates with certificates of authenticities and a set of 6 expresso cups for free.
I am still happy with my purchase regardless of the broken ones.
What do you think? My husband thinks I still got a good deal and I do too, plus I am waiting for a refund from the insurance company for $100, which is what I claimed.

Hi Chris, I think you did great! Especially since there are so many pieces you LOVE. That rolling pin is WONDERFUL!!! and if you add up JUST THE PIECES you are keeping, you would have paid more. It is heartbreaking about all the broken ones. I think we have ALL EXPERIENCED your heartbreak at one time or another "SO" we feel for you "AND THE SELLER"(she sounds very nice)... It's great that you will be getting a check back...AND Here's my question, "Am I the only person in the world that WHEN THIS HAPPENS, does not part with the broken items"??? I had a giant turkey platter that had broken and I sat it here on a windowsill and would not through it away! I think I was hoping that during the night the "Little Magic Elves would make it ALL Better"! Well, it didn't happen and "FINALLY" I parted with it, UGH! Not without lots of SAD FEELINGS like I should have buried it on the hill with my Sweet Dogs...
Well, Enjoy your new goodies!
Have a wonderful week,
Big Hugs to you,
Donna

I know how much you love Polish Pottery and I'm happy you got such a good deal. The broken pieces make me so sad, what a shame they weren't better packed. I love the rolling pin, too! Everything is so pretty! :)

Wow! Seems like a good deal but I sure wouldn't have been happy about all of those broken dishes. One or two is one thing, but wow, that was a lot. I'm glad you're enjoying what you got.

How sad about all the broken dishes, Christine. However, I know you are thrilled with all the perfect ones. I really love the ones that have the line trees on them.

Aw, man....that's a bummer about all the broken ones! I wish you had been able to salvage more. The pieces that did arrive intact are beautiful, though! I LOVE that rolling pin!!!! You have lots of fun new items for your collection (or your booth!) now!

I have admired Polish Pottery for a long time, but never purchased any due to everything else I collect. This is all lovely, and I'm so sorry about your broken pieces. I recently had a similar experience with a Gail Pittman purchase on eBay. Unfortunately, it does happen.

My daughter chose this pottery when she married, but her tastes have gone more to French country so guess who got the pottery! Believe me, I'm delighted.

Hi Christine,
I am so amazed to see that Polish pottery in your home. It is really nice and remind me to a grandmothers home. So cozy. You made anyway a great deal. May be you can use the broken pieces for a mosaic. For example to adorn a pretty tray or a little table. I think it is easy to break into smaller pieces and would make a lovely matching decoration. I hope you will get the refund, too. Thank you for sharing your new achievement and for your sweet comment on my blog.
Best greetings, Johanna

I love Polish Pottery too. And yes they are expensive. I have a couple of pieces that I have found along the way, but not enough except to add as an accent. Have you thought about taking the broken pieces and making a ceramic table top?? I've seen them done with fine china.

Even with all the sadly broken pieces, you recieved an enourmous addition to your collection. I agree with Donna from Congalie Cottage that it is hard to give up pieces even when broken. Hugs, Dawna

Hello Christine,

A friend and I both collect Polish Pottery and am wondering if you're interested in selling any pieces. My friend, Amy, needs salad plates. I need dinner plates. We've both got enough cups and bowls. It's hard for me to tell exactly what you've got on that table.
Yes, you are not the only one crazy about Polish Pottery.

Another lovely collection you have there! I was just in a shop in New England that had lots of Polish pottery for sale. As far as those broken pieces, people make all sorts of things out of them nowadays: table tops, bird houses, jewelry... Maybe you can still use them in a different way.

This was a really super deal and they are so beautiful. I'll bet it was heartbreaking to see so many broken ones. The Post Office is so hard on packages. I'm visiting from Favorite Things Party and I'm the co-host (would you believe?). Best wishes, Linda

This could be a great opportunity to learn how to do shard art. You could use the shard to make a fantastic mirror...or do shard art for a set of charger plates. I hope that you do it! Great get. Cherry Kay

I didn't know you collected this...I guess I shouldn't be surprised! Can't wait to see what you do with all of this.

Wow! Where are you going to put all of this stuff? LOL! You could take all the broken pieces and do a mosaic tabletop or flower pot or something. The rolling pin is my favorite too.!

What I own in polish pottery is so little yet I love them so much. They are what I use for all the snacks at a party. Your collection is amazing and you got a great deal for sure. I only buy at TJ Maxx when I have a chance to stop at one. It is so hard to look at the broken ones! Enjoy your treasures.

Yes Christine, you got a fabulous deal, I paid that much for my transferware, brought from Europe, intact to my house, so it is worth it! I love, love the rolling pin and most pieces, they're great! I love it when you can find more pieces for a special dish collection, such as this one. Hope you get the $100 from the insurance. I haven't been around as my computer got stolen in the airport while waiting for my flight back home with Alexandra. She's better and I've been so busy with her convalescense at home and my mother, as always. I just got a great new laptop, smaller and lighter than the one before and I'm so glad. Now I have to post something, it's been so long and I've missed you and blogging. Hugs,
FABBY

How sad that the seller didn't know to wrap everything in bubblewrap...I would have been a little upset to have so much arrive broken. You did get a good deal, though.
