Pink Flowers and Longwood Tour

Saturday is a double post day for me. First is Pink Saturday hosted by Beverly of http://howsweetthesound.typepad.com/my_weblog/. I host Sightseeing Sat. and I invite anyone interested to join. You can post any travel or scenery pictures. I will have Mr. Linky at the bottom and you can enter your permalink there.

I went around the deck taking pictures of all the pink flowers that we have and this mandevalia is the first one. We have 3 colors growing, white, yellow and of course, this pink one. Actually we have 2 pink ones, the other one is below.
I just love how it climbs the trellis.
and this is some kind of an Asian orchid, I believe.
This is an artificial rose but I just love it because it looks so real.
This is the other mandevalia I mentioned above.
I hope you enjoyed seeing our pink flowers. Thanks to Beverly for giving us an opportunity to show them off.

An now for Sightseeing Sat, I would like to show you one of the more interesting antebellum houses here in town.
As you know, we had guests from Chicago last week and I took them here.
This is the view as we drove in.
This is the front of the house. It is octagonal in shape.
and this is the back
What is so interesting about this house is that the owner never finished building it because of the civil war. The family occupied the basement because that was the only finished portion. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take pictures there or I would have shown you the furniture which are mostly original to the house.
This was supposed to be the main floor and there would have been a 4 seasons statue placed in each niche.
If you look up, this is what you will see.
It was supposed to have 6 stories. Some of the old stuff found in the house, these are an old luggage and trunk.
the basin that they used for baths
Packing crates since they mostly ordered furniture from out of the state and country. Mr. Nutt and his wife Julia built the house but never finished it. Mr. Nutt died right after the basement was done so Julia lived there with the children. They had 11 children though not everyone lived to adulthood.
Here I am with my classmate from HS who visited me after 43 years of us not seeing each other.
balcony. I love the tall Corinthian columns.
front entryLook up!
An Austin guy donated the house to the Natchez Garden Club with the provision that it should never be finished, to preserve history.
The carriage house
My niece Stephanie and her friend, Elvira.
The Out House. Gloria, this is for you!
Close up of the out house.
I hope you enjoyed this tour. I wish I could have shown you the finished part with all the furniture but unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take pictures. Sorry!
If you want to participate, please enter your name and your permalink. Thanks.

Christine, your flowers are beautiful. And I loved the trip to Longwood. What an interesting story. It's really a shame that it can't be finished. It would be neat to see what the owners had envisioned for it. Was the donor from Austin, TX? Wonder how he came to own it, perhaps family? Thanks for the mini vacation, I always love your travel posts. Kathy (PS, thanks for the rain prayers, that little bit I showed in my last post was IT - 3/4 of an inch, but I'll take whatever we can get lol)

Hi Christine! Your flowers are gorgeous! I have that same orchid in a dark pink. Is yours in the ground or in a pot? This is my first year with it and I am wondering what to do this winter! Love the house! So sad that it was never finished! Happy weekend...hugs...Debbie

Happy Pink Saturday!

What an awesome tour!
Do you have special tips for the Mandevalia?
Could you bring it indoors for the Winter?

I had a few on my balcony but got some pest...

Christine, This is one cool tour. This would have been one fabulous house in it's day. How sad for this family that they had to live in the basement. Pretty pinks today ~ Robyn

I love the mandevalia. My son bought me a plant several mother's days ago- It doesn't do so well up here in colorado as it did down in the warmer weather of New Mexico.

If you will click on the title about the laundry detergent it will take you to the recipe. For the pink soap I used ZOTE instead of the fels naptha soap. It works just as well and is very cheap to make plus saving all that packaging!

Hi Christine! Oh, what beautiful pink flowers. Those faux ones do look real. What an interesting home - if you can call it that! :) How interesting that the family lived in the basement. I would love to tour that! I'm familiar with outhouses. My grandmother had one when I was a little girl and I just hated to go out there! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I love the pinks you selected to share with us today. I sw Longwood about 40 years ago and loved the tour. Your photos are wonderful.

Hi Christine, Your posts are always so very interesting. You are a neat lady !
I was fooling around with this template, but couldn't get the colors right. I like your choice very much. I could change mine every other day and not sure why.
Keep taking those fabulous trips as we love the pictures.

We toured Longwood when we visited Natchez a few years ago. I think it's sad that it was never finished. It's really something, but it would have been special.

Love the tour. I know they want to preserve history, but it would have been neat to see it completed as well. To see the glamour of how it was intended to look. I don't think I've ever seen such a fancy outhouse either!

So sorry that I am getting to you a day late and a dollar short for Pink Saturday. Seems like the day just got away from me.

The sun was out in the afternoon and all day today, so with all the rain we've had, I went outside to play.

As always, it is a pleasure to come here to see what you are sharing and what you've been up to during the week. Thanks so much for making my weekend all ♥Pink and Pretty♥

Christine,

I love the pink flowers/vine. I already forgot the name but I can bet I can't grow it here. I'm laughing because I have the same trellis it is growing in!! Oh, if only...

What a neat place to tour (How did you meet up with your friend after 43 years? How awesome!! Has she changed? lol!!)

It is so sad that the house was only built so far and then all the tragedy struck. I'm glad they left everything as is.

Such an interesting post Christine, I'm happy I am catching up!! :-)

xoxo

I think it would be discouraging to have to continue upkeep on a house that will never be finished! Wouldn't it be a beautiful place if it were finished. Your pink flowers are beautiful. laurie
